A torrent client is a program, such as qBitTorrent or uTorrent, that can read your downloaded torrent, gather the torrent's files, and begin downloading the files onto your computer. For the purposes of this article, you'll use qBitTorrent to open your torrent files.
This is because qBitTorrent isn't ad-supported and thus will not spam you while you download your torrent's files. Open the qBitTorrent website.
Select a download link. Depending on your operating system, click one of the following options: Windows — Click bit installer to the right of the "Mirror link" heading in the Windows section. If your computer uses a bit operating system, click the bit installer link there instead. You can check your computer's bit number if you're unclear on the correct option here.
Wait for the setup file to download. You'll have to wait five seconds after the download page finishes loading before the setup file will download. Depending on your browser's settings, you may have to click Save File or select a save location before the file will download. Double-click the downloaded setup file. Doing so will open the qBitTorrent setup window. Install qBitTorrent. Depending on your computer's operating system, do the following: Windows — Click Yes when prompted, then follow the on-screen installation prompts.
Mac — Drag the qBitTorrent app icon onto the "Applications" folder shortcut, then follow any on-screen instructions. You may need to verify the download before qBitTorrent will install. Part 2. Open qBitTorrent. Click or double-click the qBitTorrent app icon, which resembles a white "qb" on a light-blue background.
If qBitTorrent opens once the installation is complete, skip this step. Click I Agree when prompted. This will close the prompt window and finish opening the qBitTorrent window. Click Tools. It's a tab at the top of the qBitTorrent window. A drop-down menu will appear. On a Mac, click the qBitTorrent menu item in the top-left corner of the screen to prompt a drop-down menu.
Click Options…. This is in the Tools drop-down menu. The Options window will open. On a Mac, click Preferences Scroll down to the "File association" heading. You'll find this in the middle of the page. Check the "Use qBittorrent for. This will ensure that double-clicking any torrent you download will automatically open the torrent in qBitTorrent.
If this box is already checked, you're ready to find a torrent. Click OK. It's at the bottom of the window. Doing so saves your settings and closes the window. Part 3. Search for your torrent online.
Type in the name of the file you want to download followed by the word torrent e. Select a site. In the list of search results, click a link that resembles your desired file name. Check the torrent's details. Once you're on the torrent's page, check the torrent's title and the "About" or "Details" section to ensure that you've selected the correct file. You'll usually find information about the torrent's language, file size, and more here.
Look for a higher "Seed" number than "Leech" number. If a torrent has no seeds or only a few seeds and a large number of leeches or "peers" , you won't be able to download the torrent's files. Even if there are a couple of seeds, you won't be able to download the file s at a reasonable speed. Read the torrent's comments or reviews. And Cindy from London and Timo from Helsinki. Think of your IP address like a digital social security number. Meaning that every movie, show, or, ahem, adult film you download is likely in a database somewhere associated with the IP address your device was using at the time. Using the connection logs from your ISP, this activity can then be pinpointed to you. Much of this information is already systematically being shared or sold by ISPs. Probably yours too. They will pass on this information to their partners or whoever is willing to pay!
Not only is this a massive breach of your privacy, it can also lead to even more trouble down the road. Your ISP is probably keeping tabs on your online activities and can use your downloading of torrents as an excuse to so-called throttle or shape your Internet connection speeds.
But throttling and shaping are the least of your worries. For instance, trolls might use the information about your IP address to complain or otherwise request that your ISP reveal for your personal information.
In fact, some of these trolls make money solely from pursuing people who download torrents. We sometimes forget, but the Internet is still pretty much the Wild West when it comes to hackers, viruses, malware and the like. In the UK, they have even started sending torrenters to prison. And that trend may spread elsewhere. For instance, research groups make it a point to collect this data for a variety of reasons, as does your ISP. Do you really want people knowing everything you do or download online?
You might get the James Gunn treatment in the future. Or maybe your partner or friends or enemies! There are now do-it-yourself torrent monitoring tools like IKnowWhatYouDownload that let people do this. Fortunately, all of these nasty scenarios can be avoided with a few easy precautions, starting with a VPN service or even a high-quality Bittorrent proxy. Plus, most VPNs use shared IPs , meaning there are hundreds or even thousands of users sharing a pool of IP addresses at any given time.
In short, these features make you very hard to track down. A leecher is a user that is downloading, but is not currently seeding. A leecher becomes a seeder when the full file has been downloaded. If there are significantly more leechers than seeders, the amount of bandwidth you receive will be lower, resulting in slower downloads.
Choose a torrent with a good size versus quality. This is especially important for video files. Because compression can affect quality, smaller files will often look and sound significantly poorer than the same video with a larger size.
On the flipside, downloading a larger file can take significantly longer depending on your connection. Read as many comments as possible to determine if other users feel that the quality of the file is good and worth your time. Some trackers have a rating system which allows users to vote on if the file is good or not. Download a magnet link if available. These files are slightly different than a standard torrent file. They match content based on a unique identifier that can then be accessed without the use of central trackers.
Make sure that you can run the content. Torrents can be used to transfer any file type. Because of this, the file you download may be one that you are not familiar with. VLC Player is a free, open-source media player that can play virtually any media file that you download.
ISO files are disc images, and either need to be burned or mounted in a virtual drive in order to run them. Beware of viruses. Because torrents often exist in a legal gray area, there is no oversight as to the kinds of files that are made available. This means that hackers will embed viruses in torrents that they hope to spread to other users. These are often included in popular searches in order to get the most victims possible.
Scan every file that you download for viruses. Try to download files that have been released by trusted sources in the community. Always check comments and ratings to see if anyone else experienced virus attacks with the torrent.
Part 2. The BitTorrent protocol lets you exchange or distribute data over the Internet. There's no central server involved; data is downloaded from other users seeders. You need a client application that will connect to the host and manage the download.
There are multiple clients available for free online. The torrent file that you download from the tracker site is very small, usually only a few KB in size. This file does not contain the content that you are downloading. The file acts as a guide for downloading pieces of the file from other clients. Use the BitTorrent client you installed in the previous step to open the file. Your torrent client should be configured to automatically open torrent files. If yours is not, you can drag the torrent file into the client window to add it to the download queue.
Depending on how your torrent client is configured, you may be asked where you want to download the content to when you open the torrent file.
Select a location that you can remember. You can check the progress of your download in the torrent client. Most clients will allow you to see how many seeders you are connected to as well. Torrent clients will automatically try to download at the fastest speed allowed by your connection.
Downloading multiple files at once will slow the overall speed of each file. From here you can limit the download speed and upload speed. This is useful if you want to stream a movie while the file is downloading. Add more trackers to the torrent. If you are having difficulty connecting to enough seeders to download the file, you can try adding more trackers to the torrent.
Do not attempt this if you are using a private tracker, as you may get banned. Find a list of active trackers online. There are several websites that list active trackers. Copy the list of trackers to your clipboard.
Right-click on the torrent in the client. Select Properties from the menu. Select the General tab. You should see a list of trackers in a box there may be just one. Paste the list that you copied into the box. You need a blank line in between each tracker that you enter.
Press OK and the torrent will automatically try connecting to the new trackers. Access your downloaded content. Once the download is complete, you can use the files that you downloaded as you normally would. If you move or delete the files, you will lose the ability to seed. You cannot start using the file before it is finished downloading. Part 3. Seed after you finish downloading. Once you finish downloading the content of a torrent file, you become a seeder.
This means that you are uploading data to other clients connected to the tracker. Seeding is what keeps a torrent community alive.
Without seeders, no one can download the files. While it's not required, it is considered a courtesy to seed for some time after the download finishes.
